The Handover Book

The Handover Book

For many years Ashley Palmer has been helping separated parents to write their own handover diaries. The purpose of these diaries was to put aside personal feelings towards each other and to communicate about all aspects of their children’s lives as they move from home to home.

It became apparent that this was a big ask when there are so many things to contend with at this time. When she talked about this with her friend and colleague Leigh Moriarty, they decided to make it much simpler for separated parents: a ready made Handover Book.

Both parents participate in completing this book with the help of a professional. This helps to keep the information that is entered into the book clear and child focused.

  • Helps everyone involved to know what is happening and when.
  • It encourages children to have a voice and express their needs.
  • Sets out practical decisions about the children: contact arrangements, education, health care, etc.
  • Encourages children to talk about their experiences in both homes.
  • Acts as a valuable reference to go back to.
  • Offers children the opportunity to see their parents working co-operatively together.
  • It can be completed in the ‘Handover Book Session’.
  • The cost divided equally between separated parents.
  • Enables you to update information as and when needed.
  • Improves communication.
  • It reduces the need for a discussion between parents at the point of handover and reduce the likelihood of conflict.
  • Supports a successful mediation outcome thus reducing the necessity to go through the family courts.
