About Ashley Palmer

Ashley Palmer family mediator

Having my own experiences of growing up in an extremely high conflict home, I know the complexities of emotions when parents separate. By experiencing first-hand the needs of a child and the long-term impact conflict can have, I’m unwaveringly passionate about helping separated families navigate the winding road ahead.

I also know how important it is to feel confident that the professional you choose to help you navigate separation is not only qualified and registered, but supportive, respectful and non-judgemental.

My Professional Background

In 2009, I started work in both the private and public sector as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. In 2011, I furthered my training to become a Family Mediator. Realising my desire to work with children within the process, I trained to become a Child Consultant in 2013. This has been my passion ever since.

No one offered me a voice when I was 10 years old. How fortunate I am now to be in the position to allow children the opportunity to share their views safely with their parents.

I was a Board Member of The Family Mediators Association (FMA) for three years and Chair of the Communications Committee. I was also a Child Inclusive Mediation Trainer for the FMA.

In 2017, I wrote and published The Handover Book, uniquely designed to reduce parental conflict between separating families and focus on the needs of children.

We think we listen,
but very rarely do we listen with understanding.
Listening is a special kind of strength
that creates space for change.

My Approach

Everyone, without exception, can recall an event that differs from someone else’s experience of the same event. As a mediator, therapist and human being, I recognise the impact of differing views stacking up higher and higher, to the point that it feels almost impossible to see past.

But imagine a space where that wall of resentment did not exist. Where you were free to enjoy life, enjoy your children, and enjoy your time when they are with the other parent.

I work with parents in a neutral, respectful and non-judgemental way, offering the opportunity to feel safe enough in the process to express what would work, not only what isn’t working.

My clients have kindly expressed that they feel enabled and more in control. They have been able to work through situations in a considered and creative way. It has helped them develop and grow as individuals, allowing their emotional wellbeing to stabilise alongside the more clinical process they were going through.

Beyond the Office

I have a young cockapoo, what more can I say!! I am very grateful for podcasts and audiobooks when walking around the rolling hills of Hampshire. It may sound a little cheesy but I love to learn, so conferences and training are a must in my world.
